Cheers

In London you will hear the word cheers one hundred times a day.  Apparently it has many uses:

1) clinking your glass or beer bottle like we normally think of the word

2) signing off an e-mail

3) ending a phone conversation or any conversation....."Cheers! Bye!"

4) expressing gratitude.  Like this morning, I am on the bus and it is ready to pull away.  There is a guy running down the block to catch the bus and the bus decides to wait for him.  When he finally gets on the bus, he says to the bus driver "Cheers!".

So now you know.  Other stereotypical British words really are used as well.  Rubish, bloody hell, brilliant and fuck off.

My favorites:
We had our third tube strike on Wednesday and the announcement at the station was "Charing Cross station is closed due to industrial action".  Industrial action?!  You mean strike...

You will not be asked if you want some more wine, you will be asked if you need a "top-up".

You must Mind everything.  There is no watch your step or watch your head warnings; it is "Mind your head" or "Mind the gap".
